Yesterday, Tuesday, from Plaza de Bolívar, President Gustavo Petro approved the Pension Reform and called on all Colombians to defend this new law.

In his speech, accompanied by members of his cabinet, congressmen, magistrates of the courts, members of control bodies and older adults, Petro stressed the importance of looking at the reform “from the eyes of love» rather than the dollar, arguing that this approach may be more efficient and effective.

The president highlighted the performance of the House of Representatives, calling it wise and dignified. by approving the reform without succumbing to private interests. In addition, he called on senior citizens, the immediate beneficiaries of the law, to organize themselves in a popular movement in municipalities, cities and neighborhoods to support the reform.We must go out and march, regardless of our age, and teach the youth that together we can change things.“, Petro said.

The reform, which will be implemented progressively, will benefit two million senior citizens, guaranteeing rights to the most vulnerable citizens.including peasants, poor women and destitute elderly people. Petro stressed that the real objective of the policy is to secure these rights and that the struggle must continue to achieve this.

The president highlighted the presence of José del Carmen Estepa, an 89-year-old from Boyacá, as a symbol of reform.The reform has been signed, but there is still a lot of ground to cover before it becomes a reality“he said, stressing the need for continued support from citizens and the various branches of power, especially the judiciary.

Petro urged the judiciary to protect the reform, saying that “it must not be lost” and requesting that it be evaluated with a view to love and social justice. He recalled that the Social Rule of Law, according to the Colombian Constitution, obliges the three branches of the State to work for social rights.

The president concluded his speech by recalling that the reform was stalled for thirteen months by interests seeking to prevent its approval. However, he stressed that the House of Representatives acted wisely, allowing the reform to move forward and benefiting millions of Colombians. Finally, Petro raised his voice for Colombia to continue on its path of change and transformation.
