The exchange of levs into euros will be carried out at 2,230 stations of “Bulgarian Post” in settlements where there are no banks. The government commissioned the company to perform a service of general economic interest – cash exchange of banknotes and coins from levs into euros for a period of time from 6 months, counting from the date of our acceptance into the Eurozone, the Ministry of Transport reports.

In this way, an easy and affordable way to exchange banknotes and coins from levs to euros is provided in the settlements where there are no offices or branches of a credit institution. “Bulgarian Post” has over 2,700 post offices, including in hard-to-reach areas. They serve 5.6 million Bulgarians. 1,921 of the stations are located in small settlements with a total population of over 1.4 million inhabitants. Providing this service in small settlements , in which there is no other alternative, will create convenience for citizens, saving them time and money to travel to big cities.

The company will exchange banknotes and coins from BGN to Euro free of charge at the official exchange rate up to BGN 1,000 per day per person. For amounts from BGN 1,000 to BGN 10,000 per day, a prior request is required, and only at certain post offices in the country.

The company is currently developing a training plan for about 2,500 employees who will undergo special training. Public procurement is also being prepared for the purchase of counters, video surveillance cameras and other equipment.

“Bulgarian Post has the largest logistics network in the country and its role will be key to the smooth transition to the common European currency in small settlements. I am convinced that the trust enjoyed by the postal operator will further contribute to the smooth running of the process”, stressed the Minister of Transport and Communications, Georgi Gvozdeikov, after the adoption of today’s government decision.
