The SPD was just behind the BSW in the European elections in Brandenburg. Prime Minister Woidke is nevertheless confident about the state elections – and comments on Wagenknecht.

Brandenburg’s Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) attacks Sahra Wagenknecht – but does not rule out talks with her alliance BSW after the state elections in just over two months. “There are two main lines in politics: talk and craftsmanship. If things go well, the two go well together or both happen, but there is also talk and craftsmanship,” said Woidke in an interview with the German Press Agency. “I haven’t noticed her using craftsmanship so far, but in the end politics is craftsmanship.”

The SPD’s top candidate sees several deficits in Wagenknecht and the BSW: “I think it is part of her strategy that she leaves a lot open so that she can unite all wishes and expectations,” said Woidke.

And: “Sahra Wagenknecht is not personally running in Brandenburg, so she cannot be elected here.” A new state parliament will be elected in Brandenburg on September 22nd. The BSW offers a left-wing social policy and calls for strict restrictions on migration.

The SPD’s top candidate is open to talks with the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance after the election. “If the BSW wants to prove that it can govern, then we may talk to the BSW,” said Woidke. “In the end, however, pragmatism is needed in government action. The state of Brandenburg is not deciding on the migration issue or the future of Ukraine.” Woidke, however, demanded that Germany take on a stronger mediating role for a possible peace solution to the Ukraine war.

In the most recent election poll by Infratest dimap from July, the SPD was on a par with the CDU with 19 percent, behind the AfD with 23 percent. The BSW of former Left politician Wagenknecht achieved 16 percent. The SPD and BSW have ruled out cooperation with the AfD. In the European elections, the SPD in Brandenburg came in at 13.1 percent, just behind the BSW, which achieved 13.8 percent. However, European and state elections are not comparable.
