This Tuesday (16/07), Cristiane Soares Baré, or Cristiane Baré, became an ancestor.

Cris was born in São Gabriel da Cachoeira, in Alto Rio Negro (AM) and was active in the indigenous movement from a young age. She was the coordinator of the Indigenous Students Movement of Amazonas (Meiam).

She graduated in law from the State University of Amazonas (UEA), and was the deputy secretary of the Special Committee for the Protection of Indigenous Peoples of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) and recommended in recent years to the Coordination of Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon Brazil. (Coib).

Also, she was a founding member of the They servedhas contributed to the entire process of creating the Amazon Indigenous Fund of Brazil.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Cris bravely dedicated himself to supporting Coiab while denouncing the neglect of the indigenous people of the Amazon, in the distribution of hygiene, cleaning and protection kits, among other measures.

At the end of last year, Cris participated in the seminar “Human rights: environmental racism, migration and collective action”organized by the Judicial Observatory of the National Council for Justice (CNJ) on Human Rights, where she recalled the socio-environmental consequences of predatory economic activities and projects that destroy, day after day, the lives of indigenous people .

She was also one of the native lawyers, in September 2022 oral arguments in the Federal Supreme Court (STF), in the paradigmatic judgment on Extraordinary Appeal (RE) 1,017,365, which defined the unconstitutionality of the harmful thesis related to the “time frame” of the delimitation of Native Lands

Then, she reminded us that indigenous people are convinced that “plants, animals and water have spirits, and, in this sense, they are also historical and political beings”.

“For us, the end is not an abstract thing. We are the territory, we are the forests, we are the biome. One cannot live without the other. The people who live in this territory are also important beings. It is our worldview. For us, the rivers have life, the forest has life, and it is these beings that we must protect”, he said. in June 2023at the National Mobilization Camp against Marco Temporal, in Brasília.

Cris leaves this world, however, without solving the issue. Like many who came and their descendants before her, leaving us her legacy of struggle and hope that indigenous rights are guaranteed and respected.

Our condolences to your family, friends and everyone at Coiab in this painful moment.

Rest in peace, hero Cristiane Baré.
