The International Book Fair in Guatemala (Filgua) came to an end and left several memories and cultural experiences for all Guatemalans who had the opportunity to visit it. Since its inception in 2000, Filgua has promoted reading and culture in the country, consolidating itself as one of the most important literary and cultural events in the region. In this edition, one of the main attractions was the stand dedicated to Miguel Ángel Asturias, one of the most important writers in Guatemala.

He standlocated at the main entrance of the fair, offered visitors a complete overview of Asturias’ life and work. This special space included information about his career, old pieces that belonged to him and his most representative works throughout the years. In addition, the Guatemalan’s influence on world literature was highlighted, showing how his writings have transcended borders.

The theme of Filgua 2024, “Let’s talk about migration”, was also reflected in this standA world map detailed writers and artists who have migrated from their countries, including figures such as Francisco Pérez de Antón, Rodolfo Abularach and Miguel Ángel Asturias himself. This section allowed visitors to better understand the relationship between migration and cultural production, highlighting how the movement of people enriches literature and art.

The creator of this stand was the Guatemalan illustrator Andrés PalaciosAt 24 years old, Palacios has managed to stand out for his creativity and his ability to capture the cultural essence of Guatemala in his drawings. In the stand by Miguel Ángel Asturias at Filgua 2024his illustrations not only showed the history and color of the fair theme, but also featured very significant elements.

The main image of Asturias, surrounded by books and a bird, symbolized both migration and the way the writer’s works have flown and reached people around the world. This illustration came to life thanks to an interactive filter on Instagramallowing visitors to view the 3D image via their mobile phones. This use of modern technology made the stand experience even more attractive and accessible to younger generations.

The work of Andrés Palacios in this stand not only highlighted the importance of Miguel Ángel Asturias, but also showed how young Guatemalan artists can significantly contribute to the country’s culture and history. Their ability to combine traditional art with modern technologies made the stand one of the highlights of Filgua 2024.

Filgua 2024 Highlights

As every year, Filgua leaves many memories of its activities and cultural events that attract the attention of both children and adults. For this year, more than 300 cultural, artistic and children’s activities, book presentations and presentations of national and international writers, among others, were planned. In addition, there were around 73 exhibitors from national and foreign bookstores and publishers and 154 stands which offered a diverse editorial offering.

Among the highlighted activities were the International Conference on Contemporary Central American Literature, the Night Sale until midnight held on Friday the 12th, and Comic Night on Tuesday the 9th, and Harry Potter Night on July 10.
