Masdar intends to participate in COP29 together with the UAE delegation and hopes to support Azerbaijan in its successful hosting.
As reported by Day.Az, the head of the development and investment department (CIS) at Masdar, Maryam Al Mazrouei, told Trend about this.
“Every initiative that Masdar takes in Azerbaijan contributes to the national target of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030, which is in line with the country’s goal of achieving 30 percent renewable energy capacity by the same year. As part of the UAE delegation, we will certainly look forward to our participation at COP29,” she said.
Speaking about the possibility of new deals between Azerbaijan and Masdar within the COP, Al Mazrouei noted that she would be “personally interested in moving forward and signing additional agreements” between the parties.
“Azerbaijan is a key strategic market for Masdar. We started discussions with the Ministry of Energy in 2018-2019 and currently have one project in operation. The 230 MW Garadagh Solar Power Plant project was launched and has been a great success. Through the strategic cooperation between Masdar, the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan and Azerenergy, we aim to expand and build on this success,” the company representative added.
It should be noted that in November this year, Azerbaijan will host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29). The decision to do so was made at the COP28 plenary session held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Over the course of two weeks, Baku, becoming the center of the world, will host about 70-80 thousand foreign guests.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The abbreviation COP stands for Conference of Parties, which is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The convention has 198 parties. Unless the parties decide otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
