Ernesto Borges Pérez, a Cuban political prisoner, spent a total of 26 years held captive in the dungeons of the Castro regime on July 17.
Arrested in 1998 on charges of espionage, Borges’ life since then has been a long succession of challenges and difficulties behind bars.
At the time of his arrest, Borges was in the process of delivering information on Cuban spies destined to operate in the United States and various NATO countries to the United States Interests Section in Havana.
It was then that the apparatus of injustice at the service of the Castro regime imposed the maximum sentence, initially death, but later commuted to 30 years of imprisonment.
His confinement has been marked by extreme conditions (as is the case for many political prisoners), including long periods in inhumane cells, deprivation of adequate medical care and severely limited contact with his family.
“Four years ago, her mother, Saint Ivonne Pérez Díaz, passed away from being unable to bear so much suffering.”said Raúl Borges, Ernesto’s father, in a statement to CubaNet.
Throughout his years in the dungeons, Ernesto Borges has been deprived of fundamental moments, such as the growth of his daughter, who was barely four years old at the time of his arrest.
The consequences of his imprisonment have also severely deteriorated his health, facing serious conditions without adequate treatment.
