First of all, as the Minister of Justice, I cannot but ask you about the case of the Director of the State Chancellery, Jānis Citskovskis. On July 9, the government and therefore you also decided to demote him, thus punishing him for violations in the so-called ex-prime minister Krišjānis Kariņš flight case. Citskovskis, with his statements that Dace Kļaviņa, adviser to Prime Minister Evikas Silina, encouraged him to lie by accepting this responsibility, and in return promised to arrange the matter in such a way that he would not face any consequences, gives all this a specific tone. How do you assess this situation as the Minister of Justice?
At the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers (MK), this issue was considered based on the decision of the disciplinary commission. It was not a matter raised by the CM or otherwise where we would hear all sides in one sitting. In the Commission, this evaluation took place over the course of several months. The Disciplinary Affairs Commission consists of several civil servants, and yes, there are also representatives of the Prime Minister’s Office, who are only legal, but collegially they already make those decisions. Therefore, I also humanly understand that in such a situation, of course, there is a desire to justify one’s defense, if one could say so, based on the fact that Citskovsky has already announced that he will go to court and read a very long defense speech, which most likely then will also be submitted to the court with arguments, so I cannot comment on anything there. In a country governed by the rule of law, this is how it should be, and I respect that. I can only say that the government’s decision was unanimous.
Knowing these circumstances, that the civil servant, if his words are to be believed, was offered a market, inviting him to take responsibility instead of a politician and promising to sort out issues that could otherwise be solved legally due to political influence, don’t you think they should be investigated separately?
I know that in this case there are statements of one person, which are not supported by any written evidence, so I can neither evaluate it nor comment in any other way.
