A photograph has been circulating on social media that has caused outrage among Italians and the art community. It shows a girl simulating a sexual act with a statue of Bacchus by Giambologna in Florence, Italy.

In fact, the girl, perhaps not entirely sober, desecrates the monument that stands on the corner with the Ponte Vecchio, using it as if it were a lover and imitating a sexual act. “But are we really sure that we need this kind of tourists in Florence?” is the comment that accompanies the images and is repeatedly shared on social media.

After the climb on the Duomo, after the graffiti on the Ponte Vecchio, now it is the turn of the rude photos with the statue. The answer to the question posed by the Florentines seems obvious.

All of this was witnessed by dozens of passers-by. One of them photographed the tourist from one of the corners of the Ponte Vecchio. The image was quickly spread through social networks, generating an avalanche of criticism for the offense to the city and its heritage.

In this regard, the photo was taken by an angry resident who had posted images of the tourists on a local Facebook group. “Here is the respect for Florence,” he wrote, although the date of the photo has not been specified.

“Florence is a city that does not make visitors respect it. These continuous displays of uncivil rudeness happen because everyone feels entitled to do what they want with impunity,” said Patrizia Asproni of Confcultura, a cultural heritage organisation.

“We need to apply the ‘Singapore model’: strict controls, very high fines, zero tolerance,” he insisted.

“Tourists are welcome, but there must be respect for our monuments, whether they are originals or copies. Besides, I doubt that this lady, whom I blame, knows the difference,” said police chief Antonella Ranaldi.
