JD Vance has a special connection with India. Vance’s wife Usha Chilukuri Vance is of Indian origin. On Thursday, at the Republican National Convention, Usha made many revelations about her husband JD Vance while introducing him. Usha Vance told that when JD met her, he used to eat a lot of meat, but he also ate vegetarian food for Usha. Not only this, JD also learned to cook Indian food to impress Usha’s mother.

Usha said, ‘Although he is a typical potato and meat eater, he adopted my vegetarian diet and learned to cook Indian food from my mother. Before I knew it, he became an integral part of my family. The JD I knew then is the same JD Vance you see today.’ During this, she also joked and said that yes, his beard has changed a bit.

She also shared the story of how she met JD at Yale Law School and called him the most interesting person she knew. Usha said, “We were friends first. Then as well as now, he was the most interesting person I knew. A working class guy who suffered through a childhood, who I could barely fathom attending Yale Law School, a tough Marine who served in Iraq but whose best time was playing with puppies and watching the movie ‘Babe’.” Usha also added, “That JD and I were able to meet is a testament to this great country.”
Chilukuri is the American-born daughter of Indian immigrant parents who moved to the US in the 1980s. The American dream they went in search of is now being lived by their daughter. In his memoir, ‘Hillbilly Elegy’, JD Vance acknowledges Usha’s role in his personal and professional growth, describing her as a wonderful companion.
