In a letter, President Daniel Noboa complains that the assembly members of the Commission, which deals with the reforms arising from the popular consultation, did not accept his proposals.
The Multiparty Commission, for the treatment of the bills arising from the popular consultation, met this Saturday, June 29, 2024. And President Daniel Noboa did not like the result.
Although the National Assembly did not report the details of the session and the Commission did not broadcast the event, the Government released a letter signed by the President, stating that the report for the second debate does not comply with the result of the popular vote. In the letter, President Noboa accuses the assembly members of “legislating in favor of criminals” because they would not accept his proposals to increase penalties for crimes related to organized crime.
The President says that his proposals, for example, to increase sentences to 22 and even 26 years for those involved in organized crime, were reduced to a range between 10 and 13 years. “That is, an increase of only three years.” However, the questions and annexes of the popular consultation, raised by the Executive, did not establish the specific changes that should be made to the laws and could have gone directly to the National Assembly.
