Federal judges rejected the proposal to be elected by popular vote and accused the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has maintained a degrading and threatening discourse against them.
They said that if the initiative on judicial reform is approved, the country will have a “servile and populist” justice system.
In a statement, which was originally read by magistrates of the Thirtieth Circuit of Aguascalientesand taken up by the National Association of Circuit Magistrates and District Judges of the Judicial Branch of the Federation, it is considered that the judicial reform means the destruction of the separation of powers.
“In these years, the Executive powerwithout evidence or procedure, has generated a false perception of us, of our performance, degrading our function and threatening us through a unilateral public discourse.”
Following the talks on judicial reform, the statement indicates, the Legislative and Executive branches continue with the common position of dismissing them and “elect judges by direct vote, eliminating all political counterweights”.
They added that if with the judicial reform “judges are elected by popular vote, the separation of powers will be destroyed in the interest of pleasing those who elect them.”
For the country’s judges, “it is intentional and perverse to mix social and political justice that correspond to the Executive y Legislative with the administration of justice that corresponds to the Judicial Branch of the Federation.”
