The problems were first reported in Australia overnight with banks, supermarkets and airports among the industries reporting major disruption due to IT problems.

But as Europe woke up on Friday it became clear that they too were affected by the issue – which was reportedly linked to a software update. Windows users are reporting getting the infamous “blue screen of death” error screens on their systems which prevent them from doing their work as usual.

On Friday morning flights were suspended at Berlin airport due to “technical problems” while passengers at Amsterdam’s Schipol airport reported chaotic scenes and long lines at check-in.

Spanish airport operator Aena warned on Friday that the problems were causing changes to their network system, meaning they had to go from digital to manual. Aena, which manages 46 airports in Spain, has warned that delays could be expected on Friday, but not all airports are equally affected.

Meanwhile budget airline Ryanair said it had ‘difficulties across the network’ and advised passengers to arrive early at airports.

Swedish public transport operators are also reporting problems for bus passengers who cannot buy tickets or check timetables.

Meanwhile in the UK Sky News went off the air and several train companies said they suffered severe IT problems that could lead to train cancellations.

It is likely that many businesses – especially transport operators – are affected.
