On the morning of Thursday, July 18, a one-and-a-half-year-old girl lost her life after being forgotten in her father’s car in Marcon, province of Venice. The minor was exposed to the sun for several hours.
The girl’s father left his house and drove to his workplace. When he arrived, he parked his SUV in the company parking lot and went into the office without realizing that he had left his one and a half year old daughter in the back seat, under the intense sun. About 3 or 4 hours passed until her co-workers, as they were leaving for their lunch break, noticed that the little girl was in the vehicle.
The father had forgotten to leave his daughter at day care or with a relative, as he usually did. This oversight was fatal, because the girl was trapped in the car, where the temperature reached close to 40 degrees. In a state of despair, the father desperately tried to rescue his daughter, when he hit the car with such force that the police had to intervene to stop her.
Despite the efforts of the emergency teams, resuscitation efforts were of no use and the doctor confirmed the girl’s death. Subsequently, investigations were initiated and inquiries were made. The father and mother received psychological support to deal with the trauma.
Neighbors and relatives surrounded the family with signs of support and protection, trying to ease the pain of the tragedy. The mother, who was clearly affected, asked for respect for her pain and that of her children.
Investigations underway
Authorities are investigating whether the child seat was equipped with the mandatory safety system and is functioning properly. The company where the father works has expressed its condolences and support to the family.
This tragic incident joins a list of similar cases that have led to the implementation of regulations requiring safety systems in child seats to ensure that minors are not left behind in vehicles.
In Spain, last summer of 2023 another three-year-old child died after spending six forgotten hours in the car in Torneiros, O Porriño (Pontevedra).
