To lrytas.lt Gytis, the reader of the portal who contacted the editors, said that he wanted to deliver the accumulated containers to the taromat, but he was unpleasantly surprised.
“I bought a bottle of soft drink, after scanning, as always, they charged 10 cents per container. However, when I wanted to return the bottle, the machine would not accept it. The container is undamaged, in order, but the taromat wrote that such containers are not accepted. This is not the first time I have noticed such a case. Maybe the barcodes are not entered?”, asked the reader of the portal.
The representatives of the trade networks and the administrator supervising the taromats explained why this happens.
Erased barcodes
Portal lrytas.lt interviewed representatives of the retail chains said that they rarely receive complaints about the activities of taromats.
“Cases when we receive customer complaints about interference when delivering containers are rare. Since the beginning of this year, we have received only a dozen of them. The most common reasons why residents fail to deliver their containers are damaged and hard-to-read barcodes and folded packaging.
It is true that there have been several cases when buyers failed to deliver the container due to the manufacturer changing the bar code of the product or the dimensions of the package, without informing the “Establishment System Administrator”, Indrė Trakimaitė-Šeškuvienė, the head of the communication and corporate relations department of the Maxima shopping network, told the portal.
The representative of another shopping chain also testified that there are almost no complaints from customers, and the most common reason for complaints is a damaged container or an erased barcode.
“Sometimes it happens that the shape of the package of the drink changes, and the manufacturer does not inform the “Bail System Administrator” about it. However, such problems are extremely rare”, assured Gintarė Kitovė, head of communication of the “Iki” shopping network.
The reasons can be various
According to the representatives of “Užstato systemos administratios” VšĮ, which administers taromats in Lithuania, almost 8,000 people are currently registered in the deposit system. units of active single-use beverage packaging, and this information is updated weekly.
According to them, 685.7 million were collected and transferred for processing in the country last year. disposable packaging.
“Obviously, due to the large flow of delivered packages, there are cases when the taromot does not accept the package the first time or not at all. During reception, the taromat first checks the package barcode, weight, shape, material and so on. If the package parameters do not correspond to those described in the package register, the package will not be accepted,” company representatives explained.
There are several possible reasons why the package does not meet the above requirements: the package is not emptied or contains impurities, the manufacturer-importer started selling the product without registering the package in the package register of the deposit system.
There are cases when the shape or weight of a beverage on the market is changed over time, but such changes are not registered in the register of changes in shape.
There is also a case where the packaging is no longer valid – the manufacturer-importer has not sold the product for more than a year and the packaging is deregistered from the list of active packaging.
Only one other occurs
The scale of residents’ complaints and non-acceptance of packages is very low.
“The high percentage of packaging collection (more than 92 percent of packaging is collected every year) shows that the deposit system works as smoothly and efficiently as possible. During 2023 we registered less than 150 complaints about packages not accepted, which is less than 0.0001 percent. from all collected packages”, said the representatives of the institution that administers the activities of taromats.
However, it is emphasized that every resident’s complaint about unaccepted packages is registered in the system, and the situation is monitored.
What to do if the container could not be returned?
You went to the nearest taromat, but the taromat stubbornly spits out the package of the drink you bought?
Representatives of the “Bail System Administrator” advise first to check whether the package is participating in the bail system.
This can be done online by entering the barcode of the package on the Returnable website.
“If the package is valid and the taromat does not accept it, we invite residents to register a request on the above-mentioned website,” the interlocutors advised.
The representatives of the trade networks also advised how much to wait, after a day or so, the problem, in most cases, is solved.
“If it was not possible to return the container due to the renewed packaging, it is enough not to throw away the container and simply return it the next day. Usually, the information in the system is updated every few days”, G. Kitovė advised the buyers.
She added that there are cases when the tare return receipt is faded, damaged, or has already been cashed and the buyer simply forgot.
“There are also cases when customers come to the store with an expired receipt, whose data we no longer see. In this case, we have to check the information from the side of the system, it may take time, but cases like this are isolated”, said G. Kitovė.
However, if the customer is unable to return the tare at the taromat, it is always possible to return it to the manual collection points. Their map can be found on the Worth a Return website.
