“It is important for every defender of the homeland, who knows how to retaliate against aggressors with a weapon in his hands. Therefore, we will continue to expand the military infrastructure and increase the number of soldiers in professional military service, eventually moving to universal conscription as an essential element of universal defense,” G. Nausėda said at the opening ceremony of the Šiauliai military town on Friday.

“We take care to ensure the best possible conditions for all Lithuanian soldiers. The modern military infrastructure will allow us to continue to expand the army personnel and to continue equipping Lithuanian military units”, said the president.

The head of the country noted that in order to properly prepare to receive the German and US allies, it is important to take care of the needs of our army.

“The development of military campuses is one of the most successful projects of the national defense system in recent times. This is a necessary investment in the security of all Lithuanian people. In recent years, we have really been paying a lot of attention to military equipment and weapons, stockpiling. We are also actively preparing to receive soldiers of the German brigade and US forces”, the president told the audience.

“I am glad that at the same time it is possible to improve the service conditions of our soldiers,” he said.

Last week, the Seimas approved the changes to the structure of the army initiated by the Ministry of National Defense, which create an infantry division with a tank battalion and increase the number of conscripts. From the beginning of next year, the number of young people conscripted to serve will gradually increase and from 2027. the cutoff numbers will be between 4240 and 7040 guys. According to the Ministry of Education, in the long run, this will create conditions for the transition to universal conscription.
