Carlos Sainz sets the best time in the first free practice at the Hungarian GP

Carlos Sainz beat Max Verstappen in the first free practice session of the Hungarian Formula 1 GP, this Friday (19).
The Spanish driver posted a time of 1min18s713 and left his Ferrari teammate, the Monegasque Charles Leclerc, third fastest in the session, at the Hungarian Circuit, in Budapest.

Championship leader Verstappen led for much of the session, but lost his performance in the final minutes.
It clocked 1min18s989. Both the Red Bull Dutchman and Sainz were on soft tyres, considered the fastest available to the drivers. Leclerc, who clocked 1min19s011, used harder and slower compounds.

Under the sun and strong heat, the training took place in conditions that were completely different from the situation of the last few days in Hungary, when a storm scared the teams and even resulted in memes on social media. And, in this more favorable case, the teams at the top are changed, like the last General Doctors.

Verstappen started in front, with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton behind in the first few minutes. The McLaren and Ferrari cars came closer and started to appear in the first positions as well, in the middle of the session. And the Italian team put themselves on track in the last minutes with Carlos Sainz, who was Ferrari’s best driver in the closing stages – coming from 3rd place in Austria, two GPs ago.

The disappointment of training was McLaren, who did not maintain the pace throughout the session. Lando Norris, who entered the fight for victory in the last races, was only sixth. And Australia’s Oscar Piastri, another supporting actor trying to be the main character, was seventh fastest.
Seven-time champion Hamilton finished training in 10th place, after finishing third.

There were no major incidents or disturbances at the session, which showed a more alert attitude from the drivers in the surprising heat after the heavy rain of the last few days. The virtual safety car was activated once so that one of the stewards could remove a piece of Alexander Albon Williams’ car in the middle of the track.

The third free training session is scheduled for 7:30 am next Saturday. Then, at 11am, the starting grid will be defined by qualifying practice.
And, on Sunday, the race will start at 10am.
