A fight broke out after Uruguay-Colombia in the stands of the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, following the Colombians’ 1-0 victory that gave them a pass to the final of the 2024 Copa América.

The reasons for the brawl involving several Uruguayan players and leading to the arrest of several Colombian fans are unknown, according to DirecTV.

Uruguayan central defender Jose Maria Gimenez gave his version of events on the radio station’s microphone and accused part of the Colombian fans of attacking his family.

“This is a disaster. Our family was in danger. We had to go into the stands to take out our loved ones, including tiny newborn babies,” said the Atlético de Madrid player.

“There was not a single police officer, they arrived after half an hour (…) I hope that those who are organizing this take a little more care with the families,” he said angrily.

“Every game is happening. Our families are suffering because of some people who take a few drinks that they don’t know how to take,” he added.
