On Monday, July 1, senior military officers and government representatives spoke out about the tragic death of Second Lieutenant Aidita Ati, who was found dead at the Napo barracks.
Gian Carlo Loffredo, Minister of Defense, expressed his condolences to the family and friends of Aidita Ati, stressing that this incident has deeply impacted all the Armed Forces. In a press conference held in Manta, he assured that four people are being investigated and that they have been given precautionary measures in lieu of preventive detention.
“The Ministry of Defense will be vigilant in this case, and the Armed Forces reaffirm our commitment to transparency and integrity. Any guilt will be punished with the full force of the law,” said Loffredo.
On June 29, Aidita Ati’s body was discovered lifeless in the bed of the female staff dormitory at Napo Military Fort. According to preliminary reports, the probable cause of her death was asphyxiation due to an airway obstruction while she was sleeping.
Authorities detained 18 members of the institution for approximately eight hours to facilitate investigations, linking four of them to the case.
Jaime Vela, commander of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, assured that they have provided total openness to the Prosecutor’s Office to carry out the relevant investigations.
“Internally, we are conducting an exhaustive administrative and disciplinary investigation, beyond the established legal requirements,” Vela said.
