It is important to break this stigma, give visibility to this discrimination that is against human rights and create friendly work environments where people’s abilities can improve, promoting their health and not their illness.
Rafael Carvajal, poet and actor (Currently at the Teatro de los Invisibles) who is involved in mental health activism at hand, is in charge of presenting and entertaining the event. He started the event by writing a rap song and reviewing the nomenclature that refers to people with mental health problems, reflecting on the audience present.
During the event, the President of the Madrid Mental Health Association, Olga Real Najarro, emphasizes the associative movement as a place for meeting, training, raising awareness and mental health. He emphasized that “The Federation and Mental Health Associations is a place where we think about mental health positively, promote work without masks and remember that mental health affects us all…“. In addition, he is grateful for the support and cooperation of the members of the juries of the three competitions.
Then, the General Director of Care for People with Disabilities of the Community of Madrid intervened, Alejandra Serrano Fernández, and representative of the Government Area of Social Policies, Family and Equality of the Madrid City Council, Jose Fernandez Sanchez. They both highlighted the work they do in relation to mental health and expressed their support for the work the Federation does.
During the ceremony, the winning works in each category of this ninth edition were announced, among the 169 participate in the work (95 short stories, 53 pictures and 21 pictures). Winners are praised for their creativity, originality and impact of their work in relation to the proposed theme.
The jury of full competitionruled by Cristina Mato and Lorena Pizarrofrom the famous Ansorena art company, which has supported the holding of the UMASAM Awards since its inception, and Monica Parrapainter and graduate student in Fine Arts, thank the Madrid Mental Health Federation for having them for another year to work as a jury in this category, they congratulate all the participants and highlight the quality of the works presented.
The work that won first prize in the painting category was “Families of Flight and Being“, in second place”Warming up“and third”Sadness“. Final tasks are “Normal day“y”Device“.
By the jury of the Short story competitioncomposed by Mariano Hernandez Monsalvedoctor of medicine and psychiatrist; Clara Aurora Deive Díaz, studied in Hispanic studies from the University of Alcalá; we had Rodrigo Martínez PuertaThe success of the Short Story competition of the VIII UMASAM 2023 Awards, reflects the quality of the 95 stories presented and the hard work of selecting the winners, which will be published, as every year, in a book.
The story that won the first prize was “Interaction“, the second prize goes to ““Eight o’clock, Madrid, work,” and third for “You don’t fit here“. Final tasks are “The clothes“y”like lime“.
The last category presented was Photographywhich this year marks its fourth edition, in which the jury has been made up of Ana ValiñoSpanish documentary photographer and visual historian; Francisco Martin Tejeda, professional photographer; we had David González de la Aleja, travel and people photographer, visual artist through collections and promoter of art as a tool for renewal, a vision of freedom and stability; that shows the quality, after examining both the works and the message and descriptions provided by the artists. On this occasion, Martín Tejeda was in charge of delivering the diplomas to the winners.
The photo that won the first prize of the competition was “24 hours notice“, in second place”To work!“, and third”What is diazepam key?“. The finished photos are “Interaction“y”How can we protect ourselves?“.
The gala featured emotional speeches and a showcase of participating works from each department. The atmosphere was full of inspiration and recognition of all the participants, who, through their activities, have contributed to making visible and reflecting on mental health at work.

Before the event ends, Rafael Carvajal (producer) sings the song “Locas”, loaded with anti-semitism messages that call for reflection on the treatment of the mental health group. After the award ceremony, participants were able to enjoy a snack courtesy of the Mental Health Association of Madrid.
The Mental Health Center of Madrid thanks the high participation in the IX UMASAM Awards, to everyone who attended the event, and the judges for their dedication and commitment. They also took them away “Thank you to the Municipal Council of Arganzuela for providing the site of the Cultural Center Casa del Reloj”.
Once the physical exhibition is over, the Paintings and Photography Works will soon be available in a virtual exhibition through the Flickr platform, allowing more people to enjoy and reflect on them. Participating Short Stories will be published in a book that will be available online and in physical format.

MADRID MENTAL HEALTH FEDERATION – UMASAM
It is the Madrid Federation that brings together 16 groups of people with mental health problems and their families. It is part of the Spanish Mental Health Association and CERMI – Community of Madrid. Its main objective is the coordination and development of cooperation of family members and people with mental health problems, to improve their quality of life, reduce stigma, protect their rights and needs, raise awareness and health prevention.
