July 2024
The decision that came into force on July 1 was approved in April 2024 by the National Council after a large campaign in its favor by 280 civil unions and the administrations of Austrian provinces and cities.
This new regulation allows local traffic authorities to reduce the maximum permitted speed to 30 km/h in specific areas that show a significant need for safety as long as the change is aimed at increasing road safety for those with most vulnerable, pedestrians or cyclists.
The new measure is designed to reduce traffic speed in areas where more children are traveling (such as in the vicinity of schools, parks and daycares), the elderly, and can also use near hospitals and leisure facilities.
In Austria it is already possible for cities and regions to reduce speed limits, but the prerequisite to get approval for this change that requires the issuance of various technical reports that explain the need for the reduction, a government regulation of it causes material limitations.
According to the VCÖ, an Austrian organization that specializes in transport and transportation that is part of this whole process, in 2022, 109 people died in road accidents that occurred in urban areas. With 34 deaths, pedestrians were the largest group of victims. According to their statistics, the elderly and children are the most vulnerable: 20 of the 34 deaths are over 64 years old and four are children.
