According to media reports, the government in Bangladesh has imposed a nationwide curfew and called in the army to deal with the protests. At least 75 people were killed in Friday’s protests, with 52 people killed in Dhaka alone. At least 105 people have been killed in protests so far this week. .
For the past several days, students have been protesting against the 30% quota in government jobs given to the children of the 1971 war fighters in Bangladesh, and the anti-quota system students are clashing with the police and the student wing of the ruling party Awami League, Bangladesh. In India, 56 percent of government jobs go to quotas, of which 30 percent are reserved for children of 1971 war fighters, 10 percent for women and 10 percent for residents of certain districts.
The students are demanding that government jobs be given on merit and only 6 percent quota reserved for minorities and persons with disabilities should be maintained.The quota system in government jobs in Bangladesh was abolished in 2018, after which similar schemes were introduced in the country. The protests started last month after the High Court ruled to restore the 30 percent quota for children of 1971 war fighters in government jobs.
On the other hand, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Hasina Wajid called those protesting against the quota system as ‘volunteers’, the term ‘volunteers’ in Bangladesh is used for those who supported the Pakistani army in the 1971 war.
It should be noted that the total number of deaths in the student protests against the quota system in government jobs in Bangladesh has reached more than 100.
