“Tonight, with confidence and devotion, I proudly accept your nomination for the presidency of the United States,” Trump said in his address to the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

“We’re going to have an incredible victory and it’s going to be the beginning of the greatest four years in our country’s history,” Trump promised in his first speech since the assassination attempt. “I’m running to be the president of all America,” he emphasized.

On July 13, Trump was shot at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The attacker, who was on the roof of an adjacent building, was shot dead by Secret Service agents. A rally participant was killed in the shooting, and Trump was wounded in the ear.

“I shouldn’t be here tonight,” Trump told a packed conference room about the assassination attempt. “There was blood everywhere, but in a way I felt very safe because God was on my side,” he added.

The 78-year-old ex-president outlined his priorities on immigration and the economy, but did not do without references to false theories about the falsification of previous election results and the accusations against him.

He falsely claimed that Democrats had cheated in the 2020 election, which he lost to Joe Biden, even though a series of federal and state investigations proved that there was no systematic fraud. Trump said he “must not criminalize dissent or demonize political dissent,” although he himself has long called for the prosecution of his opponents.

The closing day of the Republican National Convention emphasized masculinity, apparently to contrast with Biden, and portrayed Trump as an American hero.
