News has it that a woman who weighed nearly 130 kg and had difficulty walking lost about 36 kg through water exercise.

According to the New York Post on the 16th, Debbie Mitchell (68), who frequently complained of knee pain and shortness of breath and suffered from type 2 diabetes, underwent a detailed heart examination due to concerns about her health.

At the time, the doctor diagnosed that Mitchell’s heart condition was good, but he was very tired and had difficulty moving due to his weight. In particular, the orthopedic surgeon recommended that Mitchell undergo artificial joint surgery to relieve his knee pain. However, to qualify for this surgery, he had to lose 4.5 kg.

While looking for ways to lose weight, Mitchell came across a program called Fluid Running on Facebook, which uses the resistance of water to build strength and prevent injury.

The fluid running program featured water-based workouts, which included aqua jogging and water aerobics reinterpreted into movements.

Mitchell had never run before, but she had been a synchronized swimmer on a swim team when she was younger, so she thought the program would be a good fit for her. She also had a pool in her backyard, so she could exercise comfortably.

The fluid running program includes a buoyancy belt and waterproof headphones that allow you to listen to underwater audio workouts. You simply put the headset on and move as instructed by a coach.

“It felt really good to put on the headset and hear the coach say, ‘Hi, fluid runners,’” he recalled. “When I slowed down, the coach said, ‘Okay, I know you’re tired. Lift your head and get back on track.’ It was like the coach was inside my head.”

Mitchell jogged in water where his feet couldn’t touch the ground, three times a week for two and a half years. As a result, he lost 80 pounds and was able to walk up to five miles a day, a weight that had previously been difficult for him to walk even one mile.

“My life changed when I started walking,” he said. “I no longer have to take medication for my type 2 diabetes.”

“The orthopedic surgeon told me, ‘For every pound you lose, the pressure on your knees goes down by three pounds (1.36 kg)’” he said. “Since the pressure on my knees has gone down, I haven’t had knee replacement surgery, and my knees don’t hurt as much as they used to. My retirement life is better than before.”

Mitchell, who complained of knee pain, is now able to travel freely. He said, “I always say, ‘If not now, then when?’ Time goes by whether you change or not. I wish I had this mindset 20 years ago,” and “I regret not changing sooner.”

Fluid running, which involves running in water, is a form of resistance training and aerobic exercise that is known to be effective in building muscle strength and burning calories without putting too much strain on the body. It burns up to 40% more calories than exercising on land.
