  • A1 will participate in the upgrade of the Discoverer supercomputer at the invitation of EuroHPC.
  • The modernization is aimed at increasing the operating performance of the supercomputer and providing new functionalities.
  • A1 will provide new data storage systems and UPS for Discoverer.

A1 will participate in the modernization of the Discoverer supercomputer after being selected as the contractor for the project by the European High Performance Computing (EuroHPC) Joint Undertaking. The purpose of the large-scale supercomputer upgrade is to increase operational performance and provide new functionalities to meet the growing needs of users. The petascale supercomputer of EuroHPC Discoverer has been operating since 2021 in “Sofia Tech Park” and can perform more than 4.5 million billion operations per second. Currently, the system is in 188th place in the TOP500 list of the most powerful supercomputer systems in the world .

As a leading provider of digital services and telecommunications solutions, as well as the largest ICT company and system integrator in the country, A1 will supply and install two new data storage systems manufactured by Hewlett Packard Enterprise. This will effectively expand Discoverer’s storage capacity in response to evolving computing requirements. To protect the supercomputer’s operations and provide a backup power source in the event of an outage or shutdown, as well as a significant increase in power, A1 will also supply additional UPS systems (uninterruptible power supplies).

Lyubomir Levchev, Senior Manager “Strategic ICT Projects, Innovations and Wholesale Sales”, A1 Bulgaria, comments:The modernization of Discoverer is an important stage in the development of high-performance computing technologies in Bulgaria and Europe. We are proud that A1 Bulgaria has a key role in this project. As capacity expands and new technologies are added, we will support Euro HPC in enabling increasingly complex and demanding computing. This project will not only improve the performance of the supercomputer, but also stimulate innovation across Europe“.

The supercomputer upgrade project will also involve the company Eviden, which is responsible for upgrading the system with a graphics processor to increase Discoverer’s overall performance.

Discoverer + will be accessible to a wide range of users, regardless of where they are in Europe, and whether they are part of the scientific community, industry or the public sector. With its increased performance and capabilities, Discoverer+ will be a strategic asset for the development of science and support the development of a wide range of applications of industrial, scientific and societal importance to Europe.

A1 Bulgaria and Eviden were selected following an invitation to participate in a tender announced in October 2023.
