Children’s souvenir bottles with Olympic symbols, which have been sold throughout France since the summer of 2023, have been subject to a mass recall due to exceeding the norms of the chemical bisphenol A (BPA), which causes disruption of the endocrine system and contributes to the development of obesity. As reported by Day.Az, this was reported on the government portal Rappel Conso, where announcements about the recall of dangerous products are published.
The announcement on the website specifies that the products in question are Vilac products – white bottles with images of the Olympic rings and mascots of the upcoming games, equipped with plastic caps in beige, blue and red. The reason for the recall is stated as: “bisphenol content that does not meet standards” and “exceeds the safe concentration level”. Those who have already purchased such products are advised not to use them and “return them to the store where they were purchased”.
Bisphenol has been banned in France since 2015, but was previously used in the production of canned food and various packaging products. It is an aromatic organic compound that is widely used as a hardener in the manufacture of plastic and various plastic-based products. At the beginning of this century, environmentalists and doctors began actively studying the effects of bisphenol on human health and the state of ecosystems. The data they collected indicate that BPA disrupts the endocrine system and contributes to the development of obesity, some forms of cancer, and thyroid dysfunction.
