“20 countries pledge support for Ukraine at NATO summit”
“Even if US support is withdrawn, Ukraine will become military independent”
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on the 19th (local time) that Ukraine’s military “self-reliance” is becoming possible because more than 20 countries have pledged to continue providing military and financial support even if the U.S. president changes and withdraws support for Ukraine.
Secretary Blinken’s remarks at the Aspen Security Forum are the first to suggest that Donald Trump could withdraw aid to Ukraine if he wins the presidency. Trump has vacillated between criticizing and supporting aid to Ukraine, and Vice Presidential nominee JD Vance has been a leading Republican opponent of aid to Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke on the phone that day.
In a post on X, President Zelensky said that “both political parties and the House and Senate of the United States have recognized the strong will of the people to protect the freedom and independence of our country,” and that the two agreed to “meet face to face to discuss measures to achieve a just and lasting peace.”
Trump wrote on TruthSocial that he thanked Zelensky for reaching out and promised to “end this war that has destroyed so many lives and innocent families.”
“Any government can pursue its own policies, but they cannot seal off the future,” Secretary Blinken said, highlighting the security agreement reached between the United States and about 20 countries, including NATO and European Union (EU) members and Japan, at the NATO summit in Washington this month.
