News has been reported that the number of patients infected with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has been increasing in Japan for the 10th consecutive week.

According to local media such as Asahi and Mainichi on the 20th, the number of new COVID-19 patients reported by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (Japan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare) from about 5,000 medical institutions nationwide over the past week from the 8th was 55,072.

The number of patients per designated medical institution was 11.18, which is about 1.4 times more than the previous week. It has been increasing for 10 consecutive weeks since May, and the recent increase has been even steeper. The number of hospitalized patients reported by designated medical institutions in a week was 3,081, which is about twice as much as 3 weeks ago.

The Asahi Shimbun reported that there were many cases of infection, particularly with the mutant virus ‘KP.3’. KP.3 is a mutant virus derived from ‘Omicron’ and is emerging as a new dominant strain in the Northern Hemisphere, including the United States.

Tokyo Medical Association Chairman Chio Ozaki told the media, “KP.3 has a strong ability to evade immunity,” and “if infections increase among young people during the summer vacation period, the risk of infection among the elderly will ultimately increase.”

According to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Japan, about 75% of patients infected between May 27 and June 23 were identified as having the KP.3 variant virus, the media reported.

Professor Atsuo Hamada of Tokyo University of Medical Science said, “I think infections will increase this summer like last year, peaking around Chuseok,” adding, “I urge the elderly to avoid crowded places, and I urge other citizens to continue to take precautions such as washing their hands.”
