While the official YouTube accounts of domestic OTT (online video service) Tving and CJ ENM channel tvN dramas were hacked, most of the channel names and video content have been restored.
After 3 PM on the 20th, the channel names of tvN dramas and Tving’s official YouTube channels were restored to their original names. It appears that most of the existing video content has also been restored.
tvN stated in a notice, “Thanks to YouTube’s cooperation, the current account has been reorganized and all existing videos have been restored, but it will take some time for the channel list to be normalized,” and “We will do our best to normalize as quickly as possible.”
Earlier, from the early hours of the morning, the channel names and logos of the two channels were changed to the virtual asset ripple. The existing videos disappeared and were replaced with content uploaded to the official ripple YouTube channel, causing inconvenience to users. Ripple is one of the representative blockchain-based overseas remittance projects.
Various online communities have been filled with posts from users complaining about inconveniences such as “All the old videos are gone” and “Have they all been deleted?”
This phenomenon is believed to be damage caused by external hacking, but the cause of the hacking incident has not yet been identified.
CJ ENM and Tving have been working on recovering from the hacking since this morning. The two companies stated, “We are aware of the channel hacking and are taking steps to resolve the issue with YouTube,” and “We will do our best to quickly restore the channel.”
tvN drama YouTube subscribers are 7.11 million, and Tving has 986,000.
