In a painful week for Ecuadorian football, Universidad Católica also suffered from the poor performance by tying Alianza de Colombia without goals.
In a match played at the Atahualpa Olympic Stadium, U. Católica did not go beyond a draw (0-0) against a Colombian team that played with one man less from the 30th minute. The capital team reached 11 points with this draw, maintaining the lead in Group B.
However, direct qualification became complicated, as Celico’s team will have to visit Cruzeiro, which is second with two points less (9).
Despite creating the clearest chances, the “Trencito Azul” did not have the composure to breach the goal defended by Pier Graziani.
Now, to qualify directly for the round of 16, Universidad Católica must at least draw in its visit to Brazil. If it loses to Cruzeiro, U. Católica will play the playoffs against one of the third-place teams in the Libertadores.
