International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said the organization has achieved gender balance in the number of participants in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics and has also achieved full equality in this area. And what about Azerbaijani Olympians?

İdman.biz has looked into the situation in this regard, taking into account our participation in the previous Olympic Games, as well as in the multi-sport competition in the French capital.

If the IOC was able to create complete equality among Olympians with the appropriate decisions, then the number of male and female athletes in countries is only a question of their results. There is no specific limit on the number of male and female athletes in countries, their opportunities can be increased simply by paying attention to women’s sports.

Of the 48 Azerbaijani athletes who won a license for Paris, 28 were men and 20 were women. As you can see, the difference is not very big, although not quite equal. In our country, male athletes make up 58.33 percent, and women – 41.67 percent.

Our teams played a big role in bringing the number of athletes to 20. Each of our two teams that will go to Paris is made up of women. Our rhythmic gymnastics team has 5 people, and our basketball team has 4.

Boxing, wrestling and judo are the reasons for the numerical superiority of our male athletes. All five of our boxers are men. Only 1 out of 12 wrestlers and 2 out of 9 judokas are women.

In sports where we have a large number of participants, women have 100 percent in gymnastics (7 people) and basketball (4 people). In badminton and swimming there is a tie – 1 man, 1 woman. In 3 sports our only representatives are men, in 4 – women.

If you look at the previous Olympics that the Azerbaijani team has participated in, the difference in the first three was noticeably large. Only three of our 23 athletes in Atlanta were women. Although the number of women in Sydney and Athens doubled to six, compared to 25 and 31 male athletes respectively, the situation has not changed much.

There has been significant progress in this area since Beijing. With eight gymnasts, our 14-member women’s team heading to China represented 31.82 percent of our 44 athletes, which was the highest percentage until Tokyo. Fifteen of the 53 athletes in London and 14 of the 56 in Rio were women. In Tokyo, there were 28 male and 16 female athletes. The percentage was 63.64 to 36.36.

It should be noted that at the opening ceremony of the Olympics, which will begin on July 26 at 21:30 Baku time, our tricolor flag will be carried by boxer Magomed Abdullayev and judoka Gultaj Mamedaliyeva.
