The solo winner of the 19th stage, Tadej Pogacar, should, without any surprise, win his 3rd Tour de France. In the general classification, the Slovenian is now 5’03 ahead of his nearest pursuit. So Pogacar has more than ever in the race to achieve the Giro-Grande Boucle double, a feat accomplished by Marco Pantani in 1998.
Beaten by the escapees by 3’30 when he started the final climb, Pogacar showed a new display of strength in the climb towards Isola 2000. He thus won by 21 seconds ahead of his second place Matteo Jorgenson, last survivor of. the breakaway, which “swallowed” it 2 kilometers from the end.
Vingegaard et Evenepoel are great
Above all, Pogacar, who signs his fourth victory on this Tour, has stunned his two chasers in the general classification. Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel crossed the line 1’42 behind the Slovenians, although they were in 5th and 6th place. The Dane is now more than five minutes behind overall, the Belgian more than seven minutes behind!
Winner of six stages during his victory at the Tour of Italy this spring, Tadej Pogacar can expect to do just as well in this Grande Boucle. He will have to win both at the Col de la Couillole on Saturday and in the Monaco-Nice time trial on Sunday, which he seems perfectly capable of.
