The United Nations Support Mission in Libya welcomed all efforts aimed at achieving a Libyan consensus that would facilitate a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process leading to national elections, and reiterated that any such steps must be comprehensive and include a clear path towards elections.
This came in a statement by the mission, regarding the meeting of members of the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State, which took place in the capital, Cairo, on July 18.
The mission encouraged the members of the two councils participating in the Cairo meeting to build on what was agreed upon and to adopt an approach that includes other concerned Libyan parties so that the outcomes of their meeting lead to a politically implementable solution.
The Mission recalled that, in accordance with the mandate issued to it by Security Council resolution 2702 (2023), it will continue its efforts to reach the political agreement that Libya needs to address all contentious issues.
This comes at a time when the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, confirmed what was stated in the statement of the meeting of the House of Representatives and the State Council held in Cairo, describing it as a positive step in the right direction.
In statements conveyed by the spokesman for the House of Representatives, Abdullah Blihaq, Aguila stressed the implementation of what was stated in this statement and the beginning of procedures to form the new executive authority in accordance with the constitutional declaration and its amendments.
The final statement of the Cairo meeting between members of the House of Representatives and the State Council stressed the agreement to form a new, unified government and hold presidential and parliamentary elections.
The statement also called on the House of Representatives to open the door for nominations for the presidency of the government, begin receiving recommendations, study the files of candidates, and present a roadmap to the House of Representatives and the State Council for a political solution.
The statement also called for ensuring the holding of presidential and parliamentary elections issued by the House of Representatives, expanding the circle of consensus, and calling on the international community to support national consensus and respect the will and sovereignty of the national decision.
The statement also stressed the importance of national reconciliation and supporting societal peace to achieve stability and build a modern civil state, and the continuation of the direct Libyan national dialogue.
In their statement, the members of the House of Representatives and the State Council announced their rejection of the principle of seizing power by imposing a fait accompli, and called on everyone to support the efforts of the two councils to restore the security, unity and stability of the country.
