President Volodymyr Oleksandrovich Zelenskyy held a conversation with the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. During the conversation, Zelenskyy congratulated Trump on his nomination and wished him strength. He also condemned the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania and stressed the importance of security for the former president.
DW writes about this.
Zelensky noted that he discussed with Trump the vital support for Ukraine from both major American parties and both houses of the US Congress to protect Ukraine’s freedom and independence. He also mentioned Russia’s ongoing attacks on Ukrainian cities and villages. As a result of the conversation, the parties agreed to discuss in a personal meeting what steps can make peace fair and truly lasting.
Donald Trump, in turn, wrote on his social network “Truth Social” that the conversation was very good. He thanked Zelensky for the connection and reiterated that after winning the election, he will be able to end the war in Ukraine. Trump emphasized that both sides will be able to come together and agree on an agreement that will end the violence and pave the way for prosperity.
In early July, The Washington Post reported on Trump’s intention to pressure Kyiv to cede the annexed Crimea and Donbass to Russia. The former US President’s advisers suggested linking peace talks to the supply of American weapons to Kyiv. In response, Volodymyr Zelensky called on Trump to share his plan to end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours, if he really has one. Zelensky stressed that Ukraine wants to be prepared for any risks to its independence and loss of statehood.
Zelensky also said he was potentially ready to meet with Trump and his team to hear their proposals. The Ukrainian president noted that it was important for Ukraine to understand whether it would have strong US support in November or would be left completely alone.
Earlier, Cursor reported that Zelensky and Trump would hold a conversation for the first time since 2021.
