Director Mehul Kumar’s film Krantiveer has completed 30 years. Many facts are coming out about the film. Meanwhile, the director has made some more revelations which are related to Nana Patekar. Recently Mehul Kumar has talked about directing the classic ‘Krantiveer’, the inspiration behind Nana Patekar’s character and much more. When riots took place after the Babri Masjid demolition, he thought of making a film on this issue that has been going on for many years. Then the thought came to his mind whether the audience would like the film on this issue. The director said, ‘I thought of making a story and then bringing this issue to the fore during the climax. Nana’s character was inspired by a friend of mine from college who used to brag about many things like he could change the whole country. I once told him, ‘Tu to sirf bolta hai. Kuch kar ke to dikha.’ He said, ‘Maine poore desh ka theka thodi le rakha hai? Main to sirf bolta hai.’ So, from this character, I weaved the story of Krantiveer.

How did Nana Patekar come into films?
He further said, ‘My film ‘Tiranga’ with Nana Patekar and Rajkumar sahab was a hit. When I told Nana the story of Krantiveer, he liked it very much. The turning point came when I announced the film. At that time, signing amount was given on the muhurat of the film. My price was fixed and I was given the signing amount. My distributors in CPCI and Rajasthan told me, Mehul ji, you have cast Raj sahab and Nana in Tiranga. Now, you are offering the lead role to Nana. Will people be able to digest this? I told them that I am not making the film for Nana. He was perfect for this role.’

Nana said a heart touching thing
Mehul further said, ‘We shot the climax of the film in Film City where Nana Patekar gives a speech, ‘Aa gaye meri maut ka tamasha dekhe…’ Nana had a heart disease and was under stress and was admitted to Nanavati Hospital. I went to meet him and told him that we will shoot the climax after he recovers. He said, ‘Mehul, if I die, not only your climax but your film will also not be completed.’ I had called 500 junior artists for the climax scene. The set was also made in Film City. The dates of the rest of the actors were also locked. So, he asked me, ‘Can you shoot this climax in one shot?’ I said yes. He asked, ‘How?’
The climax will be remembered
He further added, ‘I told him, ‘I will get four cameras. One close up, one mid, one long shot and one on a crane. We will film 2-3 shots of you with Danny Denzongpa separately.’ He said if he thinks about it he will write his dialogue. I said, ‘Okay.’ Nana came to the shoot with his doctor. I was confident that he could do it. We shot the climax in one day and it is an immortal climax. No one will believe that it was shot in a single day.’
