Divided for Half a Century: Cyprus Remembers Turkish Invasion as Leaders Deliver Clashing Messages

by time news

Fifty years after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus on July 20, 1974, the island remains divided, while the leaders of Greece and Turkey send opposing messages at a distance.

The Greek Cypriot president Nikos Christodoulides of the Republic of Cyprus stated that reunification is the only viable path, 50 years after Turkish troops invaded and left the island divided. There is “no other option” but reunification, Christodoulides told reporters in Nicosia, while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, visiting the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, said there is no benefit in resuming United Nations-led talks on the future of Cyprus.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will also arrive on the island tonight, and together with the president of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, will commemorate with a ceremony what Greece considers a Turkish invasion.
