The Spanish analyst, who spoke on Tuesday in Geneva at a meeting on the sidelines of the International Refugee Forum, denounced “the harassment that constitutes systematic behavior of the +polisario+, sometimes taking the form of death threats against activists who denounce its oppressive and corrupt practices in the camps.”
Faced with the propaganda machine of the separatists, Mr. Altamirano, who is also the spokesperson for the international peace group for the reunification of the Sahrawis, stressed the importance of “educational communication with public bodies and civil society organizations in Spain, as well as with the bodies of the international community, particularly at the European level, in order to dispel the amalgams that mislead public opinion and obscure the realities of the situation related to the question of the Moroccan Sahara.”
“As part of its propaganda maneuvers, the +polisario+ is exploiting the suffering of the population detained in the Tindouf camps, in the southwest of Algeria, to attract international aid, which will be used to acquire weapons or to increase the personal accounts of leaders who buy luxury properties and residences abroad, particularly in Spain,” he told MAP.
In his opinion, “the lack of control over the financing of international aid contributes to the worsening of the problems of corruption and the lack of transparency regarding the allocations dedicated to the camps managed by the +polisario+ like a large prison.”
At the meeting, which focused on gaps in the refugee protection system, activists and experts provided insight into the vulnerability of victims of conflict and disaster in vast areas across continents.
