“I swear to God that I will praise you in your head.” This is the ultimate threat by a white police officer to a black woman in America. Just after midnight on July 6, Sonya Massey, 36, called the U.S. Marshals Service because she suspected a burglary at her home, according to the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a video released Monday by Illinois State Police, once inside, the two officers asked him to turn off a pot of boiling water on the stove “to prevent a fire,” according to the video footage. He held the pot and one of the leaders stepped back. When the woman asked him why, the policeman laughed and said that he wanted to “get out of his hot water.”

Sonya Massey reprimanded him for this behavior, saying quietly twice, “Ah, I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.” “You shouldn’t. I swear to God I’m praising you gay,” replied one of the policemen, pulling out his gun. The woman knelt behind a table, a pan in her hand. The policeman shouted at her: “Drop the pan” and get out the guns. They then explained that they were afraid to boil water.

“Insane”

The incident of violence involving the police which also shook the country where the police are often accused of racism. Attorney Ben Crump, who is heavily involved in cases of police violence against black people and who represents the family of victim Sonya Massey, on Tuesday described the killing as “senseless”.

In a press conference, he also said that the police initially tried to abandon their responsibility, according to the family, and pointed the finger at the neighborhood. Sonya Massey was unarmed.

In a country where cases of black people or people from ethnic minorities killed by white police often hit the headlines, President Joe Biden responded on Monday by saying in a statement that the girl “should be live”.

A deadly cry for help

One of the two officers, Sean Grayson, was charged with intentional homicide. The local sheriff, Jack Campbell, called the decision to open fire “irregular”: the officer “had other options,” he said.

“When we call for help, all of us as Americans – whoever we are and wherever we live – should be able to do so without fear for our lives,” President Biden emphasized in his statement.

Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, plans to speak with the victim’s family, according to Ben Crump, who said the authorities have promised a “fair and transparent” investigation.
