US President Joe Biden will address the nation tomorrow evening from the Oval Office in connection with his decision to withdraw from the presidential race for the upcoming vote on November 5, Reuters and the Associated Press reported.
The president wrote on his account on “X” that he will talk “about what lies ahead” and how he will “finish his work for the American people.” He will make a televised address at 20:00 local time (North American Eastern Time; 03:00 Thursday Bulgarian time).
The president is scheduled to return to the White House on Tuesday after self-isolating at his home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware after testing positive for COVID-19.
Biden has not been seen in public since July 17, but yesterday he attended a campaign meeting to address the team and express his support for Vice President Kamala Harris’ bid to replace him in the presidential race, a day after he announced his retirement.
The president also said that he plans to appoint a new director of the Secret Service, writes BTA. Earlier today, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned.
She announced her decision in an email to staff following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, which has sparked growing discontent over how the government agency tasked with protecting current and former heads of state could fail in its core mission.
Cheatle, who has been in office since August 2022, has faced growing calls for her to resign as well as several investigations into how the gunman was able to get so close to the GOP presidential candidate at an outdoor campaign rally in the state Pennsylvania.
