Salvador Mena, director of the Agronomic Sciences Division of the University Center of Biological and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Guadalajara, explained that although drought and even organized crime have a direct impact on exports, the main negative factor is public policies.

He pointed out that subsidies that supported large commercial farmers were eliminated, which directly affected the ability to maintain and increase production, “on the basis that these farmers have enough money to meet their needs to cover; However, this view is erroneous, the subsidy is not only a direct financial support, but an investment that ensures that farmers can produce and export more.”

Salvador Mena emphasized that the lack of subsidies has an impact on agricultural production and food security in the country, “this drop in exports affects not only producers, but the entire economy and the availability of food in the domestic market, which it may result in increased prices and lower availability of certain products.”
