It’s been almost a century since the United States won first place every four years during the Olympic basketball tournament. While the United States men’s team has built an impressive team this year, the United States has also affected the women. In total, Uncle Sam’s country has won 30 medals, including 25 gold since the event was made official in 1936.

Among the men, the title has escaped the United States four times, including two editions where only American college players participated in the Olympics (1972 and 1988). In 2004, Team USA fell in the semi-finals against the future winner: Manu Ginobili of Argentina. In 1980, the United States abandoned the game in response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979.

The women’s team has won gold nine times in eleven appearances. Except for the withdrawal of the American delegation in 1980, the players finished second in 1976 and third in 1992. The rest of the time, they went to the end of the competition.

Four silver medals for France

The second most successful country, Russia has five gold medals, the titles collected under the USSR also count: three for women – including once as a unified team with players from the former Soviet republics, in 1992 – and two for men. At the men’s level, apart from Argentina and the former USSR, it was the former Yugoslavia that was the title in 1980.

For its part, the French team is in the top 5 of the most successful countries, tied with Spain. Australia has more medals in total with six beauties, but the country has one silver medal less than France (three silver and three bronze compared to four silver and one bronze for the Tricolores).

In particular, France won the silver medal in Tokyo in 2021, narrowly defeating Kevin Durant and others (87-82). Third in Tokyo, the Blues also won silver in 2012, after a final against the Americans (86-50).

The most successful countries, men and women combined

1. United States: 30 medals (25 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze).

2. Russia/former USSR: 16 medals (5 gold, 4 silver, 7 bronze).

3. Serbia/former Yugoslavia: 10 medals (1 gold, 6 silver, 3 bronze).

4. Argentina: 2 medals (1 gold, 1 bronze).

5 Spain and France: 5 medals (4 silver, 1 bronze).
