“We do not comment on Mr. Pavilion’s thoughts during the full moon,” Frederiks Janson, the president’s chief adviser, replied to Elta in writing.

As reported earlier, speaking to “Žiniai Radio” on Wednesday, Ž. Pavilion made it clear that the position of the Presidency regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is changing.

“I try to remain diplomatic, but I am not inspired by the views of one journalist who has established himself in Daukantas Square. I am afraid that he can split even bigger firewood in the world of the future, and I really hope that those voices around the president who know what freedom and democracy are, and not just some generalizations at the level of the “Republic”, will convince the president to adhere to certain things that we ourselves can save freedom and democracy in our region”, said Ž. Pavilionis, asked about the allegedly sour relations with Israel.

ELTA reminds that previously the head of the country G. Nausėda has stated that Lithuania supports the idea of two states in order to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, according to him, neither Israel nor Palestine is ready for a long-term solution.

“Each state can solve these issues as they see fit, but let’s understand that there is currently a war going on in this region – soldiers and civilians are also being killed. And the humanitarian situation is truly catastrophic,” G. Nausėda told journalists in May. “Lithuania is in principle in favor of a two-state solution. (…) Yes, this is a solution that could ensure lasting peace. However, today we see that both sides are not yet ready for this decision”, he emphasized, noting that such a decision can only further escalate the conflict.

The war in the Gaza Strip was sparked by a Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7 last year, in which the terrorists killed around 1,160 people, mostly civilians.

However, as the conflict in the Middle East continues for more than half a year, Israel receives constant criticism from the international community for the high number of civilian casualties.
