100 million donations to finish the school closure
Lee Soo-man, former executive producer of SM Entertainment, continues to maintain a close relationship with the late Kim Min-ki (1951-2024), the former head of the school and the godfather of the folk music scene, even after his death.
According to the internet newspaper ‘The Fact’ and the industry on the 24th, Lee Soo-man, who was close with Kim Min-ki while he was alive, gave 50 million won to the bereaved family the day before, asking them to use it for meal expenses for the mourners.
As the bereaved family had previously stated that they would not accept condolence money or flowers, it has been reported that they will be sending money with an emphasis on the cost of food.
This is in line with the content of the statement made by Kim Seong-min, the head of the school affairs team and nephew of Kim Min-ki, at a meeting held at the Hakrim Tea House in Daehangno on the 22nd. Regarding the reason for not receiving condolence money, Team Leader Kim explained, “Many people, knowingly or unknowingly, helped us out to support our teachers when the school closed. I think they must have saved enough money to go home.”
Previously, Lee Soo-man also donated over 100 million won to help finish the construction of the closed Daehangno Small Theater Hakjeon.
Team leader Kim added, “I think (the funeral home) will be a place where we can share a warm meal and drink tea and think about the deceased, just like the teacher always talked about.” Lee Soo-man took out more pocket money for that ‘warm meal.’
Lee Soo-man has always respected his Seoul National University senior Kim Min-ki, calling him “hyung.”
Lee Soo-man, known as the ‘Godfather of K-pop’, started out as an active singer, and his music began with folk. In 1971, right after recording an album with the folk duo ‘April and May’, he left the team due to health issues. The album came out the following year, and Lee Soo-man debuted first as a voice.
Yang Hee-eun also sang the chorus for the second album of “Collection of Beautiful Songs” released in 1972. Yang Hee-eun is a singer with a close relationship with Kim Min-ki. Yang Hee-eun sang “Morning Dew” and “Evergreen” that Kim Min-ki made. Lee Soo-man also became friends with them in this way. It was thanks to this close relationship that Lee Soo-man remade and included Kim Min-ki’s song “Autumn Letter” on singer BoA’s fifth album (2005), which he produced.
Lee Soo-man previously expressed his condolences to Newsis regarding Kim Min-ki’s passing, saying, “I express my deepest respect to senior Kim Min-ki, who instilled the spirit of youth in South Korea through music during a chaotic time of adversity and growth, and I pray for the repose of his soul.”
