Paris Olympics-Men’s Football: Morocco beats Argentina 2-1, at the end of a confusing end to the match
Saint-Etienne – Morocco beat Argentina 2-1 on Wednesday at the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium in Saint-Etienne, in a match counting for the first day of Group B of the men’s Olympic football tournament (Paris 2024), interrupted after a second goal by the Argentinians, which was finally disallowed for offside at the restart, after almost two hours.
Soufiane Rahimi opened the scoring in the 45+2nd minute after an elegant service from Bilal El Khannouss. The same Rahimi repeated the feat in the 51st minute by scoring a 2nd goal on a penalty to the advantage of Morocco.
In the 68th minute, Argentina scored its first goal through Giuliano Simeone. Cristian Medina scored a second Argentine goal in added time (90+16), after which confusion reigned and the match was interrupted.
After almost two hours, both teams took to the pitch and after a VAR check, the Argentine goal was disallowed.
The national team is playing in Group B with Argentina, Iraq and Ukraine, the Atlas Lions’ next opponent, on Saturday in Saint-Etienne.
