Under the theme “Story of a Transatlantic Encounter,” the exhibition gives pride of place to the harmonious fusion of visual artistic expressions that distinguish the United Kingdom and the United States, two friendly countries linked by a historic alliance dating back to December 20, 1777.
Through the works of artists from Morocco, Canada and different parts of the United States, this event shined the spotlight on a collective creativity that pays tribute to the richness of cultures and ideas on both sides of the Atlantic and that gives full measure to the transcendent power of art and imagination.
Initiated by the Consulate of the Kingdom in the American metropolis, in collaboration with Royal Air Maroc (RAM), the College of Staten Island and the City University of New York (CUNY), this exhibition, through the paintings of visual artists with proven talents such as Hanan Zdeg, Elham Soufi, Mostapha Naffi, Mbarek Bouali, Jamal Ouadi and Abdelilah Ennassef, reflects the essence of the Moroccan-American cultural heritage, as well as the ideals of peace, coexistence and dialogue that are the distinctive mark of the Kingdom.
According to these artists, it is a fusion of styles, techniques and perspectives that provides information on the power of sharing and communication provided by the universal language of art and which allows us to transcend cultural divides and promote rapprochement and living together.
Opening the exhibition, the Consul General of Morocco in New York, Abdelkader Jamoussi highlighted the centuries-old relations that unite Morocco and the United States, recalling that the Kingdom was the first country to recognize the independence of America in 1777.
He considered that this event, which coincides with the Presidents Day celebrated in the United States, aims to promote cultural exchange and the virtues of understanding and rapprochement for the benefit of the two peoples and friendly countries.
Speaking on this occasion, the Permanent Representative of Morocco to the UN, Ambassador Omar Hilale indicated that art and culture help build bridges between Morocco and the United States, two countries that stand out for their diversity, noting that culture is “the unifying element of humanity” to build a world free of conflicts and divisions.
He noted that artistic and cultural expression can also serve an important role in parallel diplomacy to defend the supreme interests of the Kingdom, with the first national cause at their head.
In the same vein, the artists participating in this exhibition stressed the primordial importance of art in promoting the cultural and civilizational facets of a Morocco rooted in authenticity and open to modernity.
Punctuated by Gnawa songs performed by Maâllem Hassan Hakmoun, this art exhibition also saw the participation of the mission manager at the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad, Mustapha El Mourabit, as well as members of the Moroccan Jewish community established in New York.
The ceremony ended with the presentation of awards to Moroccan professionals who have distinguished themselves in their fields of activity in the United States.
