The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become the first country to consider sending troops to the Gaza Strip as part of an international mission following the end of the conflict between Israel and the radical Palestinian movement Hamas.
As reported by Day.Az with reference to TASS, this was reported to the Financial Times by the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs of the UAE for Political Affairs, Lana Nuseibeh.
“The UAE could consider participating in the stability maintenance force [в секторе Газа] together with Arab and international partners <...> at the invitation of a reformed or authorized Prime Minister-led Palestinian Authority [национальной] administration,” Nuseibeh noted.
According to her, Abu Dhabi and Washington discussed plans to stabilize the situation in the blockaded Gaza Strip, resolve urgent humanitarian issues and restore local infrastructure. Nuseibeh stressed that the United States must take the lead for the mission to be successful. The countries continue to discuss the details of the operation, including the question of forming its contingent from military or police units, the diplomat noted.
According to the publication, representatives of other Arab countries are concerned that the deployment of troops in Gaza could be perceived as complicity with Israel. They are also afraid of being drawn into a protracted confrontation with Palestinian rebel groups. However, Nuseibeh believes that the region will see a further escalation of violence and the spread of radical movements if the operation is not carried out.
The United States is seeking to establish a peacekeeping mission to be deployed to the Gaza Strip after the conflict ends while there is no Palestinian security authority, but the Biden administration has no plans to deploy American troops to Gaza. Earlier, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told CBS that Washington was developing plans to provide security, establish governance bodies and rebuild the enclave.
On May 10, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Merit Street Media that the Jewish state believes it is necessary to establish a civilian government in the Gaza Strip with the help of the UAE, Saudi Arabia and other countries. On May 15, the Financial Times reported that Egypt, Morocco and the UAE had held initial consultations with the United States on the issue of participating in a peacekeeping operation.
