At the National Assembly confirmation hearing, Supreme Court Justice nominee Lee Sook-yeon (56, 26th Judicial Research and Training Institute), while explaining that her children acquired unlisted stocks through the so-called “daddy’s chance,” said, “These days, instead of buying gold rings for children’s first or 100th birthdays, they buy them stocks.” When lawmakers criticized her for her “inappropriate response,” the nominee bowed her head and said, “It was very inappropriate.”
At the National Assembly confirmation hearing on the 25th, when Rep. Baek Hye-ryun of the Democratic Party of Korea pointed out that “children received valuable stocks before they were even ten years old and enjoyed a 13-fold price difference. They received emperor stocks,” the nominee responded by saying, “At the time, we didn’t know what the consequences would be.” He also said, “We are investing in our children’s future,” and asked, “If we belittle this as ‘illegal gifts,’ should all parents who buy stocks for their children be criticized?”
The candidate’s daughter and son received about 3 million won each in 2006 when they were 8 and 6 years old, respectively, and purchased unlisted stocks in the bus company (Geumnam Express) operated by their uncle. The children sold these stocks in November of last year, making a capital gain of about 38 million won each. The candidate’s couple also made a profit of 788.14 million won and 1.34324 billion won each by purchasing and selling these stocks.
In response to the candidate’s remarks, Democratic Party lawmaker Heo Young pointed out, “Is this answer correct (appropriate) in the process of admitting a mistake and donating (the property)?” Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Ki-pyo also criticized, saying, “It feels like a businessperson is sitting there. I don’t think that answer is appropriate.” In response, the candidate repeatedly apologized, saying, “I think I lost my composure,” and “I’m truly sorry.” He continued, “I think I made this mistake because I was impatient about providing a foundation for my daughter, who I saw late in life, to become independent,” and humbled himself by saying, “I will work harder to live up to the public’s expectations.”
It was also revealed that the candidate received 770 million won in dividends from Geumnam Express. Park Beom-gye, the Democratic Party member and chairman of the Personnel Hearing Special Committee, criticized, “The candidate did something wrong. I am very disappointed.” Rep. Joo Jin-woo of the ruling People Power Party also pointed out, “There are definitely aspects that seem like special privileges.” In response, the candidate explained, “I did consider the dividends, such as bank interest,” but “my spouse did the entire process.” The candidate also apologized, saying, “I feel very sorry” for the part where his daughter bought and sold unlisted stocks of a cosmetics research and development (R&D) company with her father’s money, making a 63-fold profit.
