“In my time, France was at the forefront on the Sahara issue. I have always considered that there is only one credible solution, namely the one proposed by Morocco,” stressed Mr. Sarkozy during the presentation ceremony of his latest work “The Time of Fighting”, which took place in the presence of the Advisor to His Majesty the King, Mr. André Azoulay and the French Ambassador to Morocco, Mr. Christophe Lecourtier, as well as an audience of eminent personalities from the political, diplomatic, economic and cultural worlds.

“I am convinced of the Moroccanness of the Sahara. It is a position that I have always defended: a position of openness and development,” he maintained, expressing the hope that Europe could progress towards this evidence in the image of the United States.

“I defended this idea at the time of the late HM King Hassan II and also under the era of HM King Mohammed VI,” he continued, believing that “all this wasted time contributes to increasing instability and uncertainty.”

Mr. Sarkozy also noted that Morocco has been able to build a resilient economy and lasting stability, while positioning itself as an influential country on a continental scale.

On this occasion, he did not fail to express his great admiration for His Majesty King Mohammed VI, “an exceptional man and one of the great wise and visionary leaders.”

He also considered that Morocco’s strength lies in the intelligence to reconcile identity and modernity. “It is a country that respects its culture and history and at the same time embraces modernity. If there is a place where the question of identity is central, it is here: it represents an opening and not a closure,” he explained.

“Morocco has successfully entered the modern world without selling out its lifestyle, its traditions, its particular universe. It is not to Moroccans that we need to explain the importance of safeguarding a national identity,” said Mr. Sarkozy.
