Posters for the movies ‘Escape’ and ‘Dune Part 2’

“The ‘Dune’ series must be seen at ‘Yong-A-Maek’ (CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall IMAX theater)”, “Re-release for ‘Dune Chin-Ja’ (those who are crazy about Dune)”

Recently, these posts were posted on the CGV ticket reservation website. Earlier this month, when the movies ‘Dune’ (2021) and ‘Dune Part 2’ (2023) were re-released at ‘Yongamak’, a mecca for special theaters, the audience responded enthusiastically.

When the movie ‘Escape’ was released on Wednesday the 3rd, it was screened 17 times at Yongamaek over weekdays from Wednesday to Friday (the 3rd to the 5th). On the 3rd, the movie ‘Hijacking’ was screened once.

However, the weekend ‘Yong-A-Mak’, which is crowded with audiences, was different. On the 6th and 7th of this month, ‘Dune’ and ‘Dune Part 2’ were screened in all 14 rounds. In particular, ‘Dune’ was a film that was released 3 years ago, but the audience responded, “Please screen it again in IMAX next time.” Since it was a re-released film, the seat price was set at 18,000 won, lower than the regular price of 22,000 won, so the response was also hot.

Special theaters are being re-released and are being occupied by foreign films. According to the Korea Box Office Information System (KOBIS), ‘The Greatest Showman’ (2017), ‘Ford v Ferrari’ (2019), and ‘Aladdin’ (2019) were screened consecutively at ‘Dolby’ (Megabox COEX Dolby Cinema) on the weekend of the 20th and 21st. ‘Youngse X’ (CGV Yeongdeungpo Screen X) showed ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ (2021) from the 17th to the 19th. Movies that were first released three to seven years ago are taking over special theaters that are popular among movie enthusiasts.

The reason why foreign films are being re-released in special theaters is because there are not enough domestic films to compete with them. The assessment is that there are few domestic films this summer that are attractive enough to be seen in special theaters with large screens or good sound quality. In particular, there are also criticisms that disaster films such as ‘Escape: Project Silence’ and ‘Hijacking’ are not worth seeing in special theaters. A film production company official said, “Except for the comedy film ‘Handsome Guys’ (1.64 million viewers), there are no films that have notably achieved box office results,” and “From the audience’s perspective, they want to see overseas re-released blockbusters in special theaters.”

This phenomenon is getting worse, especially with the release of overseas blockbusters such as ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ and ‘Despicable Me 4’ on the 24th. ‘Inside Out 2’ (8.13 million viewers) released on the 12th of last month took up a lot of the special theaters, and now foreign films are filling up the special theaters. In fact, only ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ will be shown at Yong-A-Mac until the 28th. An official from another production company said, “‘Pilot’, which will be released on the 31st, is a comedy, and ‘The Land of Happiness’, which will be released on the 14th of next month, is a historical film, so it will not be easy for them to survive the competition for special theaters.”

However, there is a regulation that requires movie theaters to show domestic films even if their profitability deteriorates. According to Article 19 of the Enforcement Decree of the Act on the Promotion of Motion Pictures and Video Products (Enforcement Decree of the Motion Picture and Video Act), each theater must show Korean films for at least one-fifth of the year. A movie theater official said, “Domestic films are not profitable, so they are shown during the week, and foreign films that attract a large audience are shown on the weekend.”
