Organized at the headquarters of the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco in collaboration with the Sheikh Hamad Prize for Translation and International Understanding (Qatar), and the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany, this two-day meeting is attended by researchers and experts responsible for scientific organizations and institutions from Morocco and abroad.

Speaking at the opening of this conference, initiated within the framework of the activities of the Higher Academic Authority of Translation, under the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco, the permanent secretary of the Academy of the Kingdom, Abdeljalil Lahjomri, indicated that the theme of this cultural event is of great importance by emphasizing the usefulness of building bridges of knowledge between cultures and knowledge, and by reflecting again on the question of otherness according to two complementary perspectives concerning the production and translation of ideas by passing from one cultural system to another.

Mr. Lahjomri also said that the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco was ready to continue cooperating with the partner institutions of this meeting in many joint action programs.

This action “requires all of us to continue to reflect on the questions of translation which constitute an undeniable scientific necessity contributing to deepening the paths of dialogue in all areas between languages and societies, thus promoting openness and participation in the construction of human civilization,” he added.

For his part, the executive director of the Sheikh Hamad Prize for Translation and International Understanding, Labib Nahas, indicated that his participation in this conference was not accidental, adding that the relationship between the Prize and Morocco is “rooted, authentic and long-term.”

“Morocco is a country to which we owe a lot as a prize,” he said, specifying that a large number of the winners in the different categories of the prize and its juries, who have contributed in a valuable way to raising the quality criteria and advancing the action of the prize, come from Morocco.

For his part, the Dean of the Faculty of the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Matthias Rohr, stressed the importance of translation as a means of consolidating mutual understanding between peoples, specifying that working on languages and translating their texts constitutes an essential approach to accessing the wisdom of the world.

Mr. Rohr also stressed the crucial importance of translation to avoid misunderstandings that may arise from divergent interpretations and explanations of ideas.

For his part, the director of the Arabization Coordination Office, under the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), Abdelfattah Lahjomri, indicated, on behalf of the Higher Academy of Translation, that translation is not an intellectual luxury, but a cultural necessity and an indispensable condition for accessing and sharing knowledge, believing that the objective today is to “reappropriate a renewed practice of translation and its past, present and future.”

Mr. Lahjomri noted that the Higher Academy of Translation aspires, in this context, to make this conference a space for constructive dialogue, making a qualitative contribution to research in translation as a model of thought that nourishes communication between societies, far from any withdrawal that would hinder the meeting of identities.

The programme of this international conference includes the presentation of high-level research and approaches on several axes, including “Bilingualism and dual culture: is the equation valid, and how?”, “The various aspects of the transfer of poetic language and the questions of cultural rooting of metaphor”, and “The criticism of translations: analysis of models and methods of translation”.

It should be recalled that the Higher Academic Authority for Translation is a body under the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco whose mission is to promote translation works, in Morocco and abroad, between Arabic or Amazigh and other languages.

In this perspective, the Instance is mainly dedicated to the translation of reference works, studies and scientific research in various scientific fields, thought, culture, heritage and civilization.

It also ensures the encouragement of scientific research on questions of translation studies and its applications, in coordination with institutions and organizations specialized in the field, whether national or foreign.
